What does ‘understand‘ actually mean? According to the Macquarie Dictionary it means:

1.to perceive the meaning of; grasp the idea of; comprehend.  2.to be thoroughly familiar with; apprehend clearly the character or nature of.  3.to comprehend by knowing the meaning of the words employed, as a language.  4.to interpret, or assign a meaning to; take to mean.  5.to grasp the significance, implications, or importance of.  6.to regard or take as a fact, or as settled.  7.to get knowledge of; learn or hear.  8.to accept as a fact; believe.  9.to conceive the meaning of in a particular way.  10.to supply mentally as a word necessary to complete sense.  11.to perceive what is meant.  12.to have the use of the intellectual faculties.  13.to have information or knowledge about something: to understand about a matter.  14. to accept sympathetically: if you go away, I shall understand15. to be informed; believe.

There’s a lot to it, but through understanding you comprehend, become familiar with and grasp the significance, implications and importance of the things you’re trying to understand!
